George BaltzelGeorge Baltzel was born around 1839 in probably Alsace, France (which later in 1871 was taken over by The German Empire, most likely why some records state France and some state Germany). He immigrated with his siblings and mother in 1846 landing in New York on May 16th. His mother was already widowed when they started on their journey to America. Dorothy, also known as Dora in the 1900 census, Baltzel was George's mother. He had siblings: Michael (cannot be located after arrival in the United States); Barbara (married George Claus before 1870 lived in Arcadia in 1870); and Magdelena (also known as Lena, found married to Philip Claus in the 1880 census for Galen, Wayne County, New York).

Married Life
George married Eva Hartman in between the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1870 they are living in Arcadia, with George's mother, Dorothy. He is a farmer. In 1880 they have two children, Lillie and Alvina. In 1900 George and Eva can be found with three children: Frank, Eddie, and Florence. In the 1905 census he was a day laborer. George passed away in 1906.

The Hartman FamilyEva Harman was born around 1850, the daughter of Jacob and Hannah Hartman. Jacob most likely had a brother Louis. I came to this conclusion based on Louis living with Eva and George Baltzel in the 1900 census. Jacob and Hannah had the following children: Eva, Jacob, and George.

Children
Lillian Baltzel was born in 1878 in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. She married Michael Greule sometime between 1890 and 1900. They can first be found together in the 1910 census in Arcadia, with two children. She passed away in 1974.

Alvina Baltzel was born in Arcadia around 1879. I am unsure if she moved away and got married or if she may have passed away. It would appear through newspaper records that Alvina was married to Bradley Palmer prior to 1905 when Bradley is listed with wife, Ella S. In census records, Alvina's name never changes when married to Bradley Palmer which is why I had at first left this out of this record...but upon reviewing the information there is no other reason why when Henry and Eva passed away they listed survivor Mrs. Bradley Palmer. At quick search I could not locate Bradley Palmer in the 1925 census. As luck would have it Bradley Palmer worked at the post office. I was able to find J. Bradley and Mrs. Ella Stone's marriage announcement in 1904(attached below). From the information here we can search backwards and now easily find Ella married to Harry Stone in the 1900 census of Arcadia. Harry and Ella (or perhaps Alvina) had a daughter named Esther in the 1900 census, in the 1905 census she had a daughter named Fay M (article where she was Mrs. Faye Buck dated 1965 located here). Using the information provided thus far I was able to find that Harry Stone and Ella Batzel were married on December 30, 1897, this article is attached below. Harry died in March of 1904. In his obituary his parents, Mr and Mrs Chas Stone are mentioned, but his wife and daughter were not. You can find his obituary here. I cannot find Ella's death, but I know that it was prior to 1967.

Frank Baltzel was born in Arcadia on December 31, 1882. In 1905, while living with his parents, he worked on the railroad. In 1910 he can be found living with his sister, Lillian Greule in Galen, Wayne County, New York, at this time he had a confectionary store. In 1918 he is living in Newark and married to Eva White (I learned this while reading his draft card). In 1920 Frank and Eva White Baltzel are living with her mother, Mary F. White, in Arcadia. Frank was still a confectionary proprietor. In 1930 Frank lived in Newark and still was listed as a proprietor. In 1940 Frank, Eva, and her mother all lived together while he is Postmaster in Newark. If one didn't look a little further into this man's history it would be hard for them to know that he was once mayor of Newark. Frank died in May of 1981.

Edward Baltzel was born in Arcadia on January 15, 1885. His draft was filled out in 1918 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. In 1910 he was living in Arcadia married to a woman named Ellen, possibly his wife in 1920-40 Mabel E. I do not have any children listed for him.

Florence Baltzel was born around December 1886 in Arcadia. In 1906 Florence was married to Clarence Ackerson, son of Charles and Mary Vanderbilt Ackerson. In the 1930 census the couple has a daughter named Joyce who is seven years old. As far as I can tell this was their only child. |
Although there is little documented proof of this person, Henry Baltzel, I am positive he is the son of George and Eva. Besides the obituary on the other side of this write up, he was listed in the 1900 census with Lillian and her husband Michael. They were living in Paterson Ward 2, Passaic County, New Jersey.

Other Articles
In 1963 there was a car accident when J. Bradley Palmer; his wife, Mrs. Ella Baltzel Palmer; Mr. Frank Baltzel; and Mrs. Florence Baltzel Ackerson were all riding together. Frank came over a hill, probably one of the many here in the area that you cannot see beyond until you are at top, and was unable to stop before running into a station wagon. All were injured in the Baltzel car, Mrs. Ella Palmer the most seriously so.
