Sarah J. Clute Barnum
The Clute Family
Sarah Jane Clute was born on January 2, 1843 to George and Caroline Clute of Seneca, Ontario County, New York. By 1860 she had, with her family, moved to Lyons, Wayne County, New York. Her sisters names were: Caroline Augusta (born about 1842) and Mary Elizabeth (aka Libby) (born about 1844).
Sisters
Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Clute WilliamsMary Elizabeth (Libby) Clute married a man named George Williams. They lived in Michigan in 1880, with children: Charles (age 14,born in New York); Gussie (age 12, born in Michigan); Kittie (age 7); and Zao (age 4). Mary's father, George Clute passed away in 1877 in Hastings, Michigan where Mary lived with her husband and family, I assume he was visiting her, but that is just an assumption. A little digging into Mary's husband, George Williams, shows that he was from Lyons, Wayne County, New York; the son of George W. Williams (born in Pennsylvania) and Jane Williams (born in New York). In 1870 George W. Williams Sr. and his wife, Jane can be found in Hastings, Michigan with their grandson, Charles (age 4). This census states that Charles was born in Michigan. In the 1850 census of Lyons, George Sr. was a Carpenter by trade, but in 1870 he was an insurance agent.
Zao Williams moved to New York in his adulthood, and can be found in 1940 living in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, New York as a photo engraver. Kittie Williams also moved to New York, presumably around 1891 as she and Herbert A. Dillenbeck (son of Arie Dillenbeck, nephew of John Dillenbeck, who married Caroline Clute) were married. They had the following children in the 1900 census: Milton (age 5); and Hudson (age 3). They were living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. It seems that Charles Williams stayed in Michigan around the Grand Rapids area, but I can not positively say that the Charles listed in the 1910 and 1920 census are the same as the one listed in 1870 and 1880. Augusta (Gussie) Williams married John Larkin in between 1880 and 1900 in Michigan. They had children: Kittie; Olive; and Frances. |
Caroline Augusta Clute Belden DillenbeckCaroline Augusta married a man named John Dillenbeck, they can be found in the 1880 census of Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. Prior to her marriage to John Dillenbeck, Caroline Augusta was married to a man with the surname Belden, but in 1870 they were not together (he probably died), they had a daughter named Allie Belden. I am unsure of Allie's father's first name. Caroline Augusta remarried to John Dillenbeck, and had no children. Allie moved to Syracuse, apparently when she was about sixteen years old. Caroline Augusta and her daughter did not have contact for a quarter century when they were reunited (after Allie, now married to Clarence Leonard had believed her mother to be dead). Caroline passed away on July 20, 1923 at the age of 75, she was still living in Syracuse but is buried in the East Newark Cemetery.

Marriage to John Carver
John Carver was born about 1833, the son of Elizabeth Carver. He had a brother, George, who was a prominent man in Wayne County. John owned a restaurant and dining saloon when he died in 1877. He had a child, Charles, who died young, and his daughter Gracie who Sarah Jane lived with in 1880. Gracie married Ward M. Wakeman 1898. By 1910 sh

Married to Orlando Barnum
|
The 1850 census of Lyons, Wayne County, New York shows Orlando Barnum as a two year old son of George and Caroline Barnum, he has a sister named Louisa. In the 1860 census of Lyons, Orlando has two more siblings: Charles (age 7) and Norma (age 2); his older sister is now named Josephine. In the 1870 census Orlando is living with the Ellis family in Lyons, Wayne County, New York. In 1880 Orlando and Sarah are married, and the only child in the household is Gracie Carver (age 3). Orlando died in February of 1887. In the 1892 census Sarah and her daughter, now written as Gracie Barnum are living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York.
