The Descendants of Andrew Bartle
Andrew Bartle was born on July 26, 1766, his parents were Johannes Bartle and Margaret Lutt (Some people have Margaret down as being a Beard but I have seen no actual proof of that, so for the sake of having proof I am only saying Lutt). He married Chloe Hicks (born June 12, 1770). Andrew and Chloe had many children, they may not all be included in this biography. Andrew died in 1853 and is buried in the Newark Cemetery.

Johannes (John) Bartle can first be found in the 1790 census in Freehold, Albany County, New York. From a New York Genealogical Record it seems as though he had lived in the area since at least 1776. He and his wife had both passed away between the years 1800 and 1810.
Andrew's life
Andrew (Andreas) Bartle can be traced through the census' with ease. In the 1790 and the 1800 census he was living in Clermont, Columbia County, New York. In 1810 he had moved to Greenbush, Rensselaer County, New York. In 1820 he had made his way to Junius, Seneca County, New York. For the 1830, 1840, and the 1850 census he was always living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. Andrew was married to Chloe Hicks before the 1790 census. Andrew died in 1853 about two weeks after his wife, Chloe. A couple of his children were: Warren; James P.; Polly (married name Van Duesen); Elizabeth (married name Smith); and Henry. For the interest of (for now) basing this on the directory of 1900 Newark, New York I'm going to follow James P. who was listed in the directory.
James P. Bartle
The link above will take you to a well written article that shows some pictures of James P. Bartle's work. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.
The file listed below is the article listed above, "Norton, Bartle & McNeil," only when you click on download it should open right on this page and have a magnifying glass making it much easier to read.
Louisa married Mack Kenyon. In the 1870 census Louisa's widowed mother is living with her, her husband and their daughter, Nettie in Newark, New York. Moses "Mack" Kenyon's brother's wife, Antoinette, lived with the Bartle's in the 1850 census. I think she may have been a daughter of Col. James P. Bartle, but I am not able to prove this (I just did a search of family trees on ancestry.com for an Antoinette Bartle and it did come up that she is the daughter of Col. James P. Bartle, but again, no actual proof).
In the 1850 census there was a Nathan Knapp and possibly a wife, or a younger sister, Adeline Knapp (ages 18 and 17) living with the Bartle family. I am unable to provide a relationship between the two families, but if there is one and you are aware of it, please contact me so I can update this, thanks! |
Col. James Patterson Bartle was born in 1791 in Greene County, New York. He married a lady named Louisa Beulah McNeil. He is not as easy as his father to follow in census' but I do find him in 1840, 1850, and 1860 living in Arcadia. The children listed in the 1850 and 1860 census' are as follows: Andrew C. Bartle (born about 1829); Louisa Bartle (born about 1838); Chloe Adelaide Bartle (born about 1840); Alice Bartle (born about 1843 d. 1866).

In 1860 there were another person listed with the family that I cannot place as a member of the family. Her name was Ann Furlong. I was thinking she is the right age to be a daughter? (but I do not believe she was married). Ann died in the County Home, she was insane.
Almond Shumway was also listed with the family in 1860. He passed away in 1909, had been married to an Elmira Kirby. His mother's name was Gertrude Taylor and she had married Philo G. Shumway. They had other children: Jane Gertrude Shumway Bartle (married to Warren Bartle, brother of James P. Bartle); Betsey J. Shumway Gardner; and Mrs. Jacob (Phebe L) Tator.

Chloe Adelaide Bartle married a man named Richmond Fisk (biography can be seen by clicking on his name). In the early 1900's she was listed in a newspaper as living in Middletown, Connecticut. Richmond Fisk was a Reverend. They had a daughter named Alice. Alice married a man Edwin Butterfield.

Andrew C. Bartle
|
Andrew C. Bartle was born on December 2, 1828. He can be found in the 1850 census of Arcadia living with his parents and siblings. By the 1860 census Andrew was married to his wife, Mary Mulford, daughter of Andrew Mulford. There was another person, Dorothy Hyde, living in their household. In the 1870 census Andrew and Mary have a woman named Elizabeth Bries living with them. In 1880 Andrew and Mary are still married, no children, and a servant, Elizabeth Brier (even though the age is still the same as in 1870, I do believe this is the same person as in 1870 and she is listed as being their servant). In the 1892 census Andrew Bartle and Mary have their adopted daughter, Charlotte who is 20 years old. She can be seen in the 1900 directory of Arcadia with the last name Fraley. In 1900 Andrew and Mary are living alone. Mary A. Mulford Bartle died on November 4, 1902. Andrew C. Bartle died on October 27, 1906. Andrew and Mary's only daughter (adopted), Charlotte married, in 1897, Peter Kemper, Jr. He passed away in 1911. They had four children.
