Mrs. Mary L. BeckerMrs. Mary L. Becker has been quite difficult to research. After many years of searching I am still unable to provide a maiden name for her. I can provide lots of information on her husband, George Becker, and her children George and Oran Becker.
MarriageMrs. Mary L. Becker and her husband George Becker were married for possibly their entire adult lives, although they only lived together briefly. They can first be found in the 1892 census of Sodus, Wayne County, New York with both sons, George and Oran. George and Oran (the children) were both born in Cicero, Onondaga County, New York although their father, George, was originally from Clay, Onondaga County, New York.
Census RecordsAs mentioned above, Mrs. Mary L. Becker and her husband were only listed in one census together. In 1898 her husband, George, published in the newspaper that he would no longer be responsible for her as she had abandoned him taking their children. In 1900 Mary appears in Arcadia with a boarder. Mary is listed as a widow, although this is a fallacy. I cannot locate Mary's children in the 1900 census in any surrounding county, under any names (first or middle, different surnames). In 1905 Mary is listed in Arcadia again, this time her sons are both with her and they are residing on Stuart Avenue with the same boarder from the 1900 census.
In 1910 both of Mary's son had gotten married and everyone had moved. Mary and her son Oran LeRoy (Roy) Becker were living with a man that was named as her husband, but did not appear to actually be her husband (she is buried as Mrs. Mary L. Becker, wife of George) William Evans in Williamson, Wayne County, New York. It is stated in this census that Mary's father was born in France (which has so far not helped narrow down what her maiden name may have been). George (the son) and new bride, Bessie Shufelt, and children were living in Ontario, Wayne County, New York. For some unknown reason when registering for the draft George Clarence Becker (son of Mary L. and George) seemed to give an incorrect birth date of November 8, 1892 but from the 1892 census and his grave we know that he was not born in 1892. In 1915 Oran and wife, Carrie Catteau , lived in Sodus with a lodger, he also registered for the draft in 1917 at this address and he remains in Sodus for all of the remaining census' to date that have been released. In 1920 Mary L. and William Evans are still listed as living in Williamson, and still listed as married. In November of 1923 George (Mary's husband) died in Hastings, Oswego County NY at the home of his sister, Mrs. Frank Leader. A couple weeks later an article was published in the Oswego Palladium stating that George Becker only gave his wife, Mary L. Becker (of Lyons) $1 in his will, and gave his sons Oran L. Becker and George Jr. Becker his $500 estate to share and automobile that they were supposed to sell. Mary L. died in 1925 and is buried in the Sodus Rural Cemetery as the wife of George. Nothing on her maiden name at all. |
