Census' I find him in a census in 1870 living in Manchester, Ontario County, New York. In that census he is married to a lady named Sophia, who is also born in England. There are seven children in the home: William (age 12); Charlotte (age 10); Henry (age 8); James and Thomas (both age 6); Hannah (age 3) and Justine (age 1). Hannah and Justine were both born in New York, according to this census.
In 1880 Edward has moved to Palmyra, Wayne County, New York where he is living married to a lady named Maria. There are 4 children living in the home: James Barnes (age 15); Jesteen Barnes (age 10); Norton Barnes (possibly Horton) (age 6); and a step daughter, Hattie Mills (age 9). |
Edward BarnesEdward Barnes was born in England, he immigrated to the United States early in life. The 1900 census of Arcadia states in 1866 as when he immigrated, but I was able to find his ship manifest which is clearly in September 1865. When he immigrated he had with him, Sophia, his wife, his children, also a sister named Alice Barnes, and 2 other relatives (one name is illegible and says that she is his wife, maybe a sister in law I'm not sure, and a 21 year old named Charles, written as son). Below is an image of the ship, Cornelius Grinnell, that they arrived on.

Thomas B. Barnes, a florist, was born in 1865, twin brother of James Barnes. They were infants upon their arrival to NY, and had lived in Wayne/Ontario Counties for their whole lives. Thomas had a very unfortunate death, when he and his wife were hit by a train while driving. In the 1900 census Thomas, and his wife, Christina M., had a son, James who was 5 years old. For his WWI draft record, James W. Barnes lived with his parents at 111 Church Street in Newark. Thomas B. Barnes married Christina Knellar, daughter of Phillip Knellar.
