Mrs. Lavinia Blackmar Allerton
Mrs. Lavina Allerton was someone who when I first read about was quite by accident. This woman lived to be 104 years old! Her maiden name was Blackmar, the daughter of Abel and Polly Trowbridge Blackmar. Her birthdate was June 12, 1810. She was married to Meade on October 19, 1834 in Port Gibson, New York. Mrs. Lavina Allerton was survived by two daughters: Miss Louis Allerton and Mrs. Eva Putnam (Mrs. Eva Putnam was adopted by the Allerton's in 1843). She can be found in every federal census from 1850 until death. In 1850 she is living in Manchester, Ontario County, New York and in 1860 they have moved to Arcadia, New York. Her husband passed away between 1880 and 1900 (some family trees say 1884 if you are a member of ancestry you can click here and see them. As can be seen here her husband, Meade Allerton, had always lived in this area.
Meade Allerton is said to be a son of Joseph and Polly Bassett Allerton. This conclusion is drawn from an article in the newspaper mentioning that since Meade Allerton has passed on his brother, Ransom, is now the head of the family in Newark. This article can be found by searching through the papers at fultonhistory.com Ransom's obituary lists his surviving relatives, it can be found below.
His children were: Frederick M. (listed in the 1900 directory), Theron Y. Allerton (listed in the 1900 directory), Mrs. Seymour Short, Miss Mary Allerton, Anna, Lucy, Mrs. George Melick, and Mrs Edith (Edward) Allen. Jennie (not listed in this obituary, but living in the home in 1900 (as daughter) possibly was adopted, having been born Jennie Duckinfield (in Phelps, Ontario County, New York) born the daughter of Enoch and Jane Duckinfield. The evidence that points to this is in Jennie's will which is below this write up. Enoch died shortly after the 1860 census where he is listed with a few children. After that census the children seemed to split up and get adopted by the families that took them in. Jennie does not appear with Meade and Lavina until the 1870 census making the case for her being the child of the Duckinfield's as opposed to Meade and Lavina (also explaining why she was not listed in the obituary).
