Oscar Baxter
Ancestors
Charles Baxter, Oscar's father, was born in 1794. In 1850 he was living in Putnam Valley, Putnam County, New York with his parents: Jacob and Maria Davis Baxter, and his siblings: Charles; Isaac; Jarvis; and Mary. His father is the son of Marcus Jr. and Jemima Baxter Baxter (cousins that married, Jemima the daughter of Thomas (son of Marcus Sr.) and Marcus Jr. the son of Marcus Sr. I concluded this based on the fact that at the top of the page on the 1850 census where Jacob and Maria are there was an 83 year old widow named Jemima. She is living in the household of Gideon and Eliza Baxter. When I searched for a Jemima Baxter in Putnam I came to a website here and looked through one of their sources, which was for the book, Baxter Lineage, by Luther Travis. You can read about this source here. This source is also where I learned Maria Davis Baxter's maiden name. Marcus and Jemima had many children: Anna; Abraham (married Cornelia in 1814); Isaac (married Nancy Sherwood); Phoebe; Jacob (married Marie Davis); James C. (married Arvilla Adams); Abigail (married Elijah Davis, possibly a sibling of Maria Davis); Thomas; John; Jemima (married Rev. Marcus Griffin); Anar L (married Graham Ridgeway); Marcus (married Eliza Odell); and Gideon (married Eliza Ann Denny). This Baxter Family was featured in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, which can be found here.
In 1860 Jacob is a widow, living with his children: Jarvis (transcribed as James on Ancestry.com) and Mary. In 1870 Jacob is living as a boarder with the Ashmund family. There are no further records that can be found at this time relating to Jacob.
