Salinda M. Palmer Baxter
Mrs. Salinda Baxter was only an occupant in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York after the death of her husband, Giles Baxter in 1888. Before that she had been an almost life-long resident of Michigan, even though she was born somewhere in New York in 1847. Her parents were Percival Palmer and Marie Hoag. Percival Palmer was the son of Milo and Polly Wilcos Palmer and he was born on September 2, 1810 ("Ancestors and Some Descendants of Cornelius Palmer 1801-1936," by Earl Palmer Leggett, Hard Copy, p. 22 ). Percival named his oldest daughter, Salinda, after what I believe to be his half sister, Salinda Lewis Suthers.
Salinda Palmer was born on June 11, 1846 ("Ancestors and Some Descendants of Cornelius Palmer 1801-1936," by Earl Palmer Leggett, Hard Copy, p. 23), somewhere in New York. She can be found for the first in the 1850 census of Emmett, Calhoun County, Michigan with her parents: Percival Palmer and Marie Hoag Palmer, and siblings: Eliza; Masilla; and Lewis. In the 1855 census they have moved to Campbell, Steuben County, New York. In this census Percival and Maria state that they were both born in Renselaer County, New York. Eliza, Masilla, and Salinda are documented as being born in Steuben County, while Lewis and new daughter, Alice A. (2 years old) are written as being born in Michigan. In the 1860 census Salinda is still living with her family, only they are now in Milford, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Listed with Percival, Maria, and Salinda (Cylinda in this census) are her siblings: Marala; A. A.; L. H. (Lewis); Ellison; and Edwin F.. Salinda Palmer married Giles Baxter Between the 1860 and 1870 census'. In 1870 they can be found in St. Charles, Saginaw County, Michigan. By 1880 they have moved to Emmet, Calhoun County, Michigan. They are living with Salinda's sister, Mecilla Palmer Doty; her neice, Linda; her nephew, Roy; and her nephew-in-law, Ezra. Giles died in 1888. In 1889 Salinda is in the paper for selling her land in Battle Creek. By 1900 Salinda is living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York with her Aunt, Mrs. Salinda Lewis Suthers, and a man named Robert Kellor from Scotland. In 1910 Salinda is back in Michigan as her Aunt died in 1902. She is living with her brother, Andrew Jackson Palmer, and Robert Kellor (who now claims to be born in England while his parents were born in Scotland) in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan. In 1920 Salinda is again with her brother in Battle Creek. Salinda died on October 11, 1928. She is buried in the same cemetery as her parents, and her husband; Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Relation to Salinda Lewis Suthers
Salinda Lewis Suthers was born the daughter of Benjamin Lewis (Revolutionary War Hero who died in Arcadia, New York) and Polly Wilcos Palmer Case. Salinda married a man named Ambrose Suthers who was originally from England. Ambrose passed away shortly after they were married. Salinda never had any children. She did have a lot of family, some that lived with her at times during the census, and some that were just mentioned in her will. All of Percival's children were mentioned in her will. All of the other people mentioned in her will were her sisters' children. Since Percival was married to Maria Hoag, and this is documented, we can assume that Maria and Salinda were not sisters. Since Percival named his first born son Lewis, we can also assume that he was related to the surname Lewis. Polly Wilcos Palmer Case and Benjamin Lewis were married after Percival was born, they started having children when Percival would have been about a year old, or so it seems. Benjamin may have had an older daughter named Pelly/Polly but since her birth date is 20 years earlier than the other childrens' I do not believe that she was Polly Wilcos Palmer Case Lewis' daughter. I know this evidence is all circumstantial but it is through the newspapers that I believe it becomes proven, along with Salinda Palmer Baxter being listed as Salinda Lewis Suther's niece with no other possibility for that connection. ***I have recently taken out the book, "Ancestors and Descendants of Cornelius Palmer 1801-1936," by Earl Palmer Leggett. I highly recommend this book to any one that is reading this page as it will give you much more detailed information on this branch, and some on the Lewis family (at least Polly's children). It was through this book that I found Polly's maiden name, Percival's birth date, and I was able to confirm the relationship between Percival Palmer and Polly Wilcos Palmer Case Lewis (Salinda Lewis Suthers). This book is available to take out at the Newark Library, but I have included the information pertaining to this family in the file here.
