The Appleman Family
John Adam ApplemanIn the 1900 census of Arcadia there is only one John Appleman listed. He is the same as in the directory. I followed John through the census years and although he never lived with his parents (under the name John) I was able to trace him to them and to his home country, Germany. John came to America aboard the ship, Kath Jackson, on March 26, 1847 at the age of three. From his ship manifest we learn that he came with mother Catharine and older brother Phillip (mentioned on the next column). In the 1850 census Adam is listed with his parents, John and Catharine, with siblings: Catharine, Phillip, and Harriet. In the 1860 census John "Adam" Appleman is listed as a farm laborer at the age of 19. He did serve in the Civil War (he was listed in a Civil War Muster Roll) you can find that record here if you are a fold member. By 1870 he is married (to Elizabeth) and has a three year old son, Arthur. By 1880 he is married (to a Marietta, maiden name: Burns) and has the following children: Arthur (age 13), Albert (age 7), Edna (age 3), and Sarah L. (age 1). In the 1892 census Arthur is no longer at home, Sarah L. is listed as Louise, and there are a couple more children listed: Marley (transcribed as this at ancestry, very possibly Manley or Mosley), Clara, Bertha, and Floyd. By 1900 they have had yet another child, this one is named Leon and is listed as being three years old. In 1905 "Adam" and Marietta have no children living with them, he is a blacksmith. By 1910 the household has returned back to normal, and there are no more children. In 1915 Leon is the only child still at home, age is listed as 17. Some pictures below are from things that happened in this family, marriages, deaths, etc.

Phillip ApplemanPhillip Appleman was easily found in 1860 living with his parents. Although he is not listed in the 1900 directory, I'm sure some of the files that I place on this site will be about him as he stayed in Wayne County his whole life. Phillip was listed in 1860 with his father (which surprised me as his father was not on the ship with them but must have came over sooner than the wife and children) John and mother Catherine. He also has three little siblings: Mary, Henry, and William. By 1870 Phillip is married to a woman named Jane living still in Arcadia. In 1880 Phillip is living with his brother Henry, there is no wife listed. By the 1892 census I cannot locate Phillip. He doesn't seem to have had any children, but Henry, his brother, did have at least one: Charles Wesley Appleman.
