A great deal of research has been done on the Austin family and a great debt is owed to a Mrs. Edith Austin Moore who spent a great amount of time researching and publishing books about eight different Austin families. A little write up about her, including a picture (drawing) can be found here.
John Austin was born in 1763 in Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island (according to a family tree that can be seen here. He married Waty West and they had several children: Phineas, John, Azuba, Joseph, John, Ebenezer, Elizabeth, Ira, Gideon, Ruth, James, and Larenna. All of the children except: John, Azuba, Elizabeth, Ruth, James and Larenna came to Wayne County. John, Azuba, and Larenna died when they were children.
For now I am going to focus the rest of this write up on two of the children who came to Wayne County: Ebenezer, and Joseph.

Ebenezer Austin, mentioned above, was the son of John and Waty West. He married Pheobe Sherman and by 1850 was living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. They had ten children: Phineas, Rebecca, Maria, Isaac, Henry, Ruth, Catherine, Parvis, Louisa, and Elbridge (obituary below). Elbridge's wife is the Mrs. Austin listed in the 1900 directory of Newark. More about this family can be found on this family tree.

Joseph AustinJoseph Austin, mentioned above, was the son of John and Waty West. He married Mary Galloway and was in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York prior to 1850. They had eleven children: William, Phineas, Lafayette, Jemima, Abigail, Elizabeth, Charity, Waty (possibly Waity), Esther, Beriah, and James. In the 1900 directory of Newark we find Brier (Beriah). In 1900 Brier (Beriah) Austin has his daughter, Mrs. Laura Hergett living with him (she is widowed with no children) and his wife, Mary. In 1905 they are all still living together. In 1910 Brier and his daughter are living in the household of William DePuy who is widowed with a child. By 1915 Mrs. Laura Hergett is now married to William Depew (how it is spelled in the census). By 1930 William has died and Mrs. Laura Austin Hergett Depew (DePuy) is raising William's son from his first marriage, Frederick. Some articles about the family are placed below.
