William P. Ashton
William P. Ashton was living in Arcadia in the 1900 census. He was married to a woman named Clara and had a child, Samuel Nesbit, living in the home. Clara's maiden name was Nesbit, she was born in Pennsylvania and William P. Ashton was born in Virginia (according to every census except the 1870 that states Maryland as his birth state). In following census' Samuel is listed with the Ashton last name. I am unsure of his relation, but he did have the Ashton last name at his death. Clara's parents were William and Nancy Nesbit. In 1870 with 2 year old Clara they lived in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania. In 1880

Clara is still listed at home with her parents in Franklin. In the 1900 census Clara and William claim they have been married for three years giving an approximate marriage date of 1897. It was a second marriage for both of them. Samuel "Nesbit" Ashton's birth year was 1891. He went on to be a very successful war veteran. His father, (probably adopted father) William P. Ashton died in 1918. Some articles relating to the family are below.
William P. Ashton's first wife was Helen Cook, she died young, between 1880 and 1900. They had a few children together: Frank; and Florence. In the 1900 census Florence is living with her maternal Grandparents: Abram and Emily Cook in Manchester, Ontario County, New York. Frank ended up dying in Michigan on June 21, 1921. He had been declared insane some time before his death. His mother's name is listed correctly, but his father is listed as Frank W. Ashton. For father's birthplace it says Virginia. In his obituary William P. names only 2 living children, one being Samuel N. Ashton, the other being Mrs. Walter Golden of Battle Creek. Mrs. Florence Golden living in Battle Creek in 1920, states that her father was born in D.C. She states this in every census while she is married except the 1910 census. In that year she states that he was born in Virginia. Walter Golden and Florence Ashton had a daughter named Harriet, I believe named after her maternal Great Grandmother, Harriet (unknown maiden name) Jenkins.
