Ellsworth Beal and Julia Borst Beals' Ancestors
Ellsworth Beal (listed in the 1900 Directory of Newark) was the son of Jeremiah Beal and his wife, Hannah. Ellsworth was married in 1884 to Carrie Borst, daughter of Jonas and Julia Ayers Borst. Jonas Borst's parentage was unclear through the census' but through newspaper articles I was able to find a brother for him, Peter. Peter can be found in the 1850 census with his father, Henry J. Borst (Blacksmith born about 1786) and a little brother, Milton. They are living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. I am unable to find any more positive information on Henry, Milton, or Peter. The names in the family to coincide with Borst family names from Scholarie County, NY but no connection can positively be made. From a William Borst's probate record (available at the Wayne County Courthouse) we can learn that William was a brother to Jonas. I do hope to make a trip to the historian's office soon for some articles that they hold pertaining to this family.
In The Census'Jeremiah Beal was born on October 11, 1814, the son of Caleb and Rachel Redfield Beal who had two other sons, John and Caleb. John was born in Conway, Massachusettes. In the 1850 census he is living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. He is married to a woman named Hannah (possible maiden name taken from some trees at ancestry.com is Corwin, daughter of Manasseh Reeves Corwin and Catherine Moore). He is 35 years old and she is 31. They have two children: Alpha R (age 3), and Alma M (age 2). Also living in the home are Anson Hillmer (25) and Cleste Cole (21).
In the 1850 census of Arcadia Bailey D. Foster (32), his wife; Harriet Newell Bailey Foster (30), their children: Hellen M. (6); and Benjamin P. Foster (5) there are two unexplained houseguests, Jonas Borst (22) and his wife Julia Ayers Borst (18). Also listed in the census is Harriet Newell Bailey's mother, Evangela Bailey. While looking through Marriage Records of Palmyra, New York I found that Julia Ayers and Jonas Borst were married on August 9, 1849 by Rev. D.C. Tomlinson, you can see that for yourself here. I find a connection between the Beal and the Foster families in John Beal's death write up in 1892. It states that John Beal and Norton Foster used to live close to eachother and died within a week of eachother. It also states that one of his daughters names were Mrs. B. D. Foster at the time of his death in 1892. I will follow the Foster's throughout the write up.
Julia Ayers was born around 1832, the daughter of Jonathan and Artemesia Percy Ayers (proof of her maiden name can be found at the website here, death record of their son Norman). In 1850 Jonathan (53) and Artemesia (44) can be found living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York with their children: Harriet (17); Percy (15); Freeman (13); Artemas (9); Albert (5); Arlon (2); Norman (23); Caroline (19); Charles (0); and Frances J. (6). Jonathan's occupation was a Miller.
By the 1860 census Jeremiah has moved to Palmyra, Wayne County, New York. He is now 44, still married to Hannah (39). They have the following children: Alpha R (13); Alma M (11); Catherine (9) (the link attached is a story written by Beth Hoad, Palmyra Historian); Lydia (7); and Arletta M (5). Also living in the home is a person named Tromener Novess (23). Jeremiah's occupation is a farmer.
In 1860 Jonas and Julia are living in Arcadia, their last name is recorded as Brest as opposed to Borst.
In 1870 Jere Beal is living in Palmyra (age 64). His wife is still living, age 50. The following children are in the household: Alma (21); Kate (19); Lydia (17); Lettie (15); Ellsworth (8); and Georgie (5). Living next door is Jeremiah's son, Alpha Beal (23). Alpha had married a woman named Eliza (age 22). They have one child, Allert who is 10 months old (name is actually Albert). Alpha is a farm laborer, probably working to help his father.
Another neighbor in 1870 is a Caleb Beal who is 48 years old, also a farmer. Caleb was living with a May Conklin (29), George Beal (22), William Beal (21), Frank (19), and Fred (14). Looking back for Caleb in previous census records we can find him in 1860 in Palmyra with a wife, Maria (age 38) and the following children: George A (12); William A (11); Franklin C. (9); and Frederick C (3). In 1870 Bailey D. Foster (52) is living with his first wife, Harriet Newell Bailey Foster, and some of their children: Harriet S. (19) and Mary S. (12). Also living with them in this census are the following: Helen M. Mead (26); Evanangela Bailey (age 86, Harriet's mother); and a man named James Devol (age 23). I do not presently know the relationship between the Mead or Devol families and the Foster or Bailey family, if there is one. In 1870 Jonas Borst (40) and Julia (38) are still living in Arcadia. They have now had a daughter named Carrie (7). In 1875 Caleb Beal (age 54) was married to Hattie Curtis (age 48) on December 2 in the town of Palmyra. Also of note in 1875 (on the same document) is the death of William A. Beal (age 25) Farmer, on November 7, of consumption. In 1880 in Palmyra we can find Caleb (age 59), Harriet (age 43); and the following children: Fred (age 24); and Gracie (age 3); also living in the home are Margaret Conklin (age 39), and an Edward Debot (age 17).
In 1880 living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York we can find Bailey D. Foster. He is not married in this census, but has a 22 year old daughter named Minnie listed on the line proceeding his in the census. A sister, widower Hattie Hoag (60) is living with him; and 2 German servants: George Walter (16) and Carrie Walter (15) are living with him as well. Also living in Palmyra are Jeremiah Beal (age 64) Jeremiah was born in New York and his parents were both born in Massachusetts. Jeremiah's wife Hannah is listed as being 60 years old born in New Jersey, both parents also born in New Jersey. The following children are listed: Lydia (age 24); Arletta (age 23); and Elesworth Beal (age 18). In 1880 Jonas (50) and Julia (48) Borst still have only one child, Carrie (17). This census states that Joanas (spelling in the census) was born in New York and both parents also born in New York. Julia states she was born in Vermont along with her parents.
In 1892 in Palmyra Jeremiah Beal (75) is listed with his children: Catharine (age 43); Liddia (age 39); and Elesworth (age 30). Also listed in the home is a child, Catharine (age 6). I am unsure at this time whose child Catharine is, but it seems likely to me that she is Catharine Arletta Beal who was born in 1889 to Ellsworth Beal and Carrie Borst.
In 1892 living in Arcadia, Wayne County, NY. Bailey Foster at this time was married to a woman named Amanda. From John Beal's obituary in 1892 we can assume that Amanda is a new wife and the daughter of John Beal. Bailey Foster's obituary states his wife's name as Mrs. J. Victoria Smith, daughter of John Beal. Perhaps the census taker didn't know the name of Bailey's wife as she died in that year. Because there is no longer a clear connection between the Foster Family and any of the families left in the census I will now stop following the Foster family. In 1892 Jonas Borst (64) and Julia (60) are still living in Arcadia.
In 1900 in Arcadia we can find Elsworth Beal, Grocery Dealer, 38 years old, married to Carrie Borst Beal (married in 1884), she is 37. They have two children in this census: Cathrine A. Beal (12); and Corwin Beal (7). Also in their household proving the marriage is Elsworth's mother in law, Julia Borst (68). This census shows her as being born in New York, her father being born in Vermont, and her mother being born in Massachusetts.
The 1905 census is for the most part, identical to the 1900 census for Ellsworth, Carrie, Catharine, Corwin and Julia. You can see this record here. As seen from the 1907 article on the right, Catherine Beal was married to Clifford Colburn in 1907. In 1910 we can find both Ellsworth Beal's and Clifford Colburn's families living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. Ellsworth is living with his wife, Carrie and their son, Corwin. As we can see from the 1906 article on the right side of this page, Julia Borst died in 1906. Clifford C. Colburn (31), Catherine Beal Colburn (23), and their child Alice E. Colburn (7 months old). Clifford's occupation is listed as a painter. They are living next door to his sister, brother in law, and mother: Frank Benjamin; Effie Benjamin; and Martha Colburn. In the 1915 census both the Beal and Colburn families have remained in Arcadia. Clifford and Catharine Beal Colburn have some new children: Martha G (3); and Edwin W. Nothing has changed in the Beal household. In 1920 Ellsworth and Carrie Beal are still living in Arcadia. Their son, Corwin, has now moved out of the home and is married living in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York. Corwin's wife's name was Elizabeth Orlopp (article on the right from 1919 announcing their engagement). Corwin's occupation is listed as a clerk in a Packing Company. Clifford and Catherine Beal Colburn were living in Rose, Wayne County, New York for the 1920 census. Clifford and "Katharine" have the following children: Alice (10); Martha (8); Edwin (4 2/12); James (4 months). In 1930 little has changed, but Corwin's occupation now has something to do with hotel equipment. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have two children: Patricia (7) and Jeremiah (3 1/12). Ellsworth and his wife, Carrie, are now listed as living in Huron on Wilson Rd, where they previously lived in Arcadia on Marbletown Rd. Clifford and "Catharine" Colburn are still living in Rose, and they have had no new children. In 1940 the Colburn family is still living in Rose. James, Alice, and Edwin are still at home. Edwin has married a woman named Iva and they have a newborn named David. Martha can be found living in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. Her occupation is listed as a stenographer. Ellsworth and Carrie Beal are living in Rose as well. Corwin and Elizabeth are still living in Palmyra. His occupation is salesman. Patricia and Corwin Jeremiah are still at home. |
