Benjamin Bailey Family
Benjamin Bailey was the son of Benjamin Bailey and Evangela (most likely Newell based on Harriet Newell Bailey Foster's name and the fact that most people have her saved in their tree's as Harriet Newell as opposed to Bailey. Benjamin Bailey, Sr. was a Reverend near New York City when he decided to remove himself to the Newark/ East Palmyra area around 1830. He can be found in 1830 with his children (no names, just numbers). In 1840 at least one child, Benjamin Jr. had left the home, both can be found as heads of households in Arcadia. By 1850 Benjamin Sr. had passed away and Evangela can be found with her daughter, Mrs. Bailey Foster. A write up about Benjamin Sr. can be found here in the History of Mattituck, Long Island. Benjamin Jr. married a woman named Phoebe Pierson. In 1860 Phoebe and Benjamin had the following children in their home: Mary E., Harriet, Calista A., and a child by the name of George Ireland (only 13 years old). In 1870 Phoebe and Benjamin had two children living with them: Harriet and Nettie C. In the 1880 census Phoebe states that her parents were both born in Long Island, which makes sense with Benjamin Bailey being from there himself.
